On the way between Frankfurt and Munich there is a small town which once exceeded the German metropolises in both liveliness and number of residents.
Today, however, you can walk around it in about 20 minutes and you will discover the almost intact 15th century atmosphere.
The city square is still the heart of Rothenburg and the tower over the town hall building is almost eight centuries old and offers the best panorama. If you are tired of idyll, just visit the Crime and Punishment Museum, where human dexterity in the sphere of torture can be a bit too much.
Seemingly plucked from a fairy tale, the Old Town section of Rothenburg City is filled with half-timbered medieval buildings painted in pastel hues.
